U-Center for Aging

SGL-LGBT Older Adults:

Center Aging is a program of The Center made up of a broad spectrum of volunteers. Our mission is to provide support and advocacy for the aging African American SGL-LGBT populations of the Chicago metropolitan area and those who provide services to them. The mission is accomplished through identification of needs and concerns, and provision or facilitation of education and training.

UBUNTU CENTER OF CHICAGO provides an array of programs and services for SGL-LGBT community members over the age of 55 through our senior program. Each week seniors visit the Center on the south side to attend workshops, take classes, share a meal or make new friends.

In addition to our onsite services, the senior program at UBUNTU CENTER OF CHICAGO hosts a number of programs throughout Chicagoland.

Meal Program – Let's do lunch!

We provide lunch and conversation for older adults every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in the Parker Ellis Senior Center at UBUNTU CENTER OF CHICAGO, in partnership with the City of Chicago. It's more than just lunch; it's a chance to get to know fellow senior SGL-LGBT community members and to find out about other community programs.

Social and Recreational Programs

Theater trips, language classes, parties and more! We host a wide array of programs ranging from intellectual and artistic to recreational and social. Click here for our Center Senior calendar to find the program that's right for you.

The Senior Program of UBUNTU CENTER OF CHICAGO is proud to participate in the SAGEWorks employment program. The SAGEWorks program is a work readiness program for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender mature workers (60+) who need or want to return to the work place. Components of the 8-week program include computer classes, resume and interviewing workshops and information about job opportunities.

SAGEWorks will:

•Increase participants' technology and job skills to remain competitive in the modern work place

•Help them gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of job search strategies as well as community-based employment resources

•Assist them in increasing their income, thereby improving their financial security and resources

To learn more about SAGEWorks and how it might be able to help you, please check back for our next orientation session or contact ucc@ubuntuchicago.org
